“The Father of the West African Novel”

"If I were an American living in America or Europe, I would be floating in a foam bath in my own private yatch off the coast of Florida."

Cyprian Ekwensi (26 September 1921 - 4 November 2007) was a noted Nigerian author of over forty published books. Whilst his contemporaries focused on the past, Ekwensi engaged with the rapid urbanisation of the new Africa. Lagos was a central character in much of his fiction. His realistic depiction of the forces that have shaped the African city dweller have seen Ekwensi be regarded as the father of the modern African novel.

Now, 100 years after the birth of this iconic figure, new efforts are being made to preserve his legacy. The Cyprian Ekwensi foundation seeks to collaborate with those who are interested in engaging in preservation work as well as those who would like to reimagine these works for film and television.
